Thank you sky pups! We humans can help protect bats by steering clear of their roost sites, avoiding pesticides to protect their immune systems, and installing bat boxes to provide safe places for 🦇 to nap. #bat #animals #conservation #batappreciationmonth

Good news for Oregon’s bats! 🦇 Recent research shows that our native species, like Little Brown, Big Brown, and Mexican Free-tailed bats, are not significantly susceptible to COVID-19. With updated guidance from ODFW, Oregon wildlife rehabilitators including Think Wild can now accept all native bat species for care, while continuing to follow standard safety precautions to protect both people and wildlife. However, Oregon recently confirmed its first detection of the fungus that causes White-No

As we head into the cooler months, some of our Pacific Northwest wildlife species will be going into hibernation, like our Townsend’s big-eared bats! Our native bats are most vulnerable during this time. To help, we install bat adits, which are special gates that allow bats to fly in and out of abandoned mines and caves while blocking the entrance to humans. If you stumble upon a hibernating population of bats, please help us protect these amazing animals by turning back and letting them sleep.

Bats, such as these straw-colored fruit bats, are quite the social creatures. Running on a reverse light cycle, our bats – located in the Desert Dome, Wild Kingdom Pavilion, Expedition Madagascar or free-flying in the Lied Jungle® – are relatively active all day long. While the majority are nocturnal, some bats—especially those that rely on visual cues, like fruit bats—can be found out and about in daylight.
