Painting a portrait involves getting a believable likeness of your subject on canvas. To do this, there is often a back-and-forth process of refining the drawing, softening edges and adjusting values in order to get a more convincing image of the person that you are painting. Here’s a time lapse video of that process in action. #art #fineart #portrait #portraitpainting #portraitartist #face #facepainting #paintingfaces #smile #smiling #smiles #expression #likeness #stepbystep #timelapse #realist

Finishing a portrait painting can often be challenging for an artist. Every minor decision can have a major impact on the overall likeness, personality and mood of the sitter. Here’s a clip from an upcoming video that I’ll be posting on my Patreon page about evaluating a painting. In it, I discuss my thinking process when deciding what changes need to be made in a painting and how to go about implementing them. Keep It Simple. Here are some simplifying techniques that I use when painting portraits. Trying to decide how much information and detail to include in a painting can be challenging at times. I like to think of painting as visual shorthand. Simplifying shapes, values and details help to produce a stronger, more unifying image for the viewer. #art #artclass #fineart #portrait #portraitpainting #portraitpainter #artist #artschool #artstudent #simple #simplify #keepitsimple #shape #shapes #value #v

The very beginning stage of a painting is often referred to as a “block-in”. During this time, large shapes, values and colors are placed on the canvas in order to get a sense of form very quickly. What you do during this initial start will often determine how the rest of the painting will progress. Here’s a time lapse video of how I begin a portrait painting by putting down the darkest areas first and then gradually working my way up the value scale. Once the block-in is established, I then beg

This initial step is extremely important because it establishes the boundaries of the head and the distances between features. I had the honor of presenting this award to my good friend, Joe Bowler, back in 2014 during the Portrait Society of America's annual conference. I've never known anyone who was more interested in talking about art, artists and art techniques more than Joe. His knowledge of art history was unsurpassed. Joe talks about the artists who inspired him over the years in this video and I hope that it will be an encouragement to others. | Brian Neher

Over 350 years ago Isaac Newton asked the same question that artists do today: How are colors related? His answer came in the form of a color wheel. While studying the properties of light, Newton took the two ends of the visible spectrum (Red and Purple) and joined them together in the form of a circle, creating the basis for our modern day color wheel. This video demonstrates how three primary colors, plus white, can be combined together to produce a full visible spectrum of colors. #art #finea

These photos became some of my most valuable resources when learning how to paint and continue to inspire me today. Over the years, I’ve put together some photo albums that include Joe’s work.
