Lava tubes are essentially caves through which lava used to flow under the lunar surface. Here on Earth, we have lava tubes that are studied by researchers in order to understand them on other worlds. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has seen pits on the surface of the Moon that look like they could lead to a network of lava tubes.
