New York City Mayor Eric Adams is running for re-election as an independent candidate after forgoing the Democratic primary. Adams will be facing Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist who was on track to win Tuesday’s primary in a stunning upset over former Gov.

Eleven candidates are vying to win the Democratic primary for mayor in New York City, the second time that ranked-choice voting will be used in the mayor’s race. Polls have shown former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani as the two front-runners. The incumbent, Eric Adams, will run as an independent in November.

Cuomo, who long led polls in the Democratic primary, conceded Tuesday night before vote-counting was even finished.
