Microsoft expanded its Sovereign Cloud offerings as European governments, including Denmark, moved to increase control over sensitive data.

“Microsoft 365 Local” only runs on Azure Local, the subset of Redmond’s cloud that brings the same hypervisor used in cloudy Azure on-prem. Microsoft suggests Azure Local as the environment in which to run applications that perform better on-prem due to requirements for low latency or security.

Microsoft joins the growing list of cloud providers looking to keep in line with the EU’s rules on data transfers, which already includes hyperscale rivals AWS, Google Cloud, and Oracle, as well as locally focused initiatives, like OVHcloud and Deep’s Luxembourg-based offering.
