Temperatures fell below -7C across much of the country, with lows of -6C at Trawsgoed in Ceredigion, Wales and -4C at Rostherne, Cheshire. But the Met Office has told Londoners that the Arctic snap that has gripped the country should end by the weekend, with temperatures set to jump to 9C on Saturday.
More yellow weather warnings have been issued for parts of the UK on Friday, as some roads are reported to be "gridlocked" and dozens of schools are closed.
