The San Diego Padres have landed closer Mason Miller and left-handed starting pitcher JP Sears from the Athletics in a blockbuster trade deadline deal, the team announced Thursday. The return includes top shortstop prospect Leodalis De Vries, who ranked No. 3 on CBS Sports' midseason rankings.

The Padres entered Thursday in the National League’s final wild-card spot at 60-49 after sweeping the New York Mets on Wednesday for their fifth consecutive win overall. San Diego trails the defending champion Dodgers (63-46) by just three games in the NL West, and Preller believes his veteran core has World Series potential.

By the time this year’s deadline passed, Preller had traded 14 players and acquired eight. Left-handers JP Sears and Nestor Cortes, first baseman Ryan O’Hearn and outfielder Ramón Laureano were among those the Padres landed in addition to Miller, an All-Star last season who is under team control through 2029.
