Chief Justice John Roberts on Wednesday paused a court-imposed midnight deadline that would have required the Trump administration to release $2 billion in frozen foreign aid, a goal that the government has claimed it is unable to meet.

That’s according to a court filing submitted on Monday, which urged the Supreme Court to excuse the government from immediately repaying some $2 billion in foreign aid.

Foreign aid organizations asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday to require President Donald Trump's administration to promptly pay them for work they already performed for the government, as a federal judge had ordered.
