U.S. President Donald Trump can keep his deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles, according to a court ruling, as protests against immigration raids look set to enter their second week in the strongest backlash since his return to power in January.

More than 2,000 "No Kings Day" protests were held on Saturday, organizers said.

Tanks, troops, and marching bands rolled through Washington in a parade of American military power, a show met by thousands of citizens who showed another kind of power: protest.

Local leaders, however, present a more complex picture of the scene on the ground.

Social media has become flooded with criticism of the Trump administration and calls for legal action against unlawful deportation practices.

“There is no emergency, widespread threat, or out of control violence in Los Angeles,” said Rick Caruso, Los Angeles real estate developer and former president of the L.A. Police Commission, on X.
