Fillmore married Abigail Powers in 1826 and served four terms in the U.S. Congress. In 1843, while serving as the comptroller of New York, he was chosen by the Whig Party to run as Zachary Taylor’s vice president in the election of 1848. After only 16 months in office, Taylor died in 1850, making Fillmore the 13th President of the United States.
