If you told Dallas Cowboys fans that their team would let Mike McCarthy leave and then pick Brian Schottenheimer as the new head coach, they might think you’re joking.
Schottenheimer's skill set, energy and understanding of the Cowboys' current situation helped Jerry Jones make his decision.
For Cowboys officials, Schottenheimer became the logical choice regardless of what others thought because of the continuity he brings to the position. Schottenheimer joined the organization as an offensive consultant in 2022 and served as the team’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.
Jerry defended the decision as the culmination of a “thorough, thorough process.” The Cowboys interviewed Robert Saleh, Leslie Frazier, Kellen Moore, and Schottenheimer. They created some buzz by making it known that they spoke to Deion Sanders and Pete Carroll, although neither was officially interviewed.
For some of those teams, that will involve finding new head coaches and/or General Managers. Three teams fired their head coaches during the season and two more have been dispatched as of 9 a.m. ET on January 6.
