Sleep apnea is a serious disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep, causing individuals to snore, gasp, and experience drops in blood oxygen levels. This condition can be life-threatening.

As a result of a legal dispute that started in late 2023, the Apple Watch Series 10 is shipping without the ability to measure blood oxygen levels with a pulse oximeter. After removing the blood oxygen feature from the Series 9 and Ultra 2 in January 2024, Apple has yet to reach a desired outcome in its patent dispute with Masimo.

Sleep apnea is a dangerous condition in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, resulting in decreased oxygen levels in the blood. Snoring, gasping, and pausing when breathing are some of the symptoms.

Apple has not discussed whether the feature’s removal was a hardware change on the Series 10 or if it was simply disabled via the software, like with the Series 9.

The embiggening of the Apple Watch is nothing new. The original Apple Watch measured 38mm and 42mm. The Series 4 bumped that up to 40mm and 44mm. The Series 7 made it 41mm and 45mm. Today, the Series 10 measures 42mm and 46mm. Normally, I rail against the trend toward larger watches, but the Series 10’s display is worth every millimeter.
