The federal government shutdown has now stretched into its third week, with no deal in sight after the Senate once again failed to advance a spending plan Tuesday night.
The longest government shutdown in U.S. history happened in Trump's first term in office. In December 2018, the federal government shut down due to a lack of appropriations. The 35-day standoff began on Dec. 22, 2018, and lasted until Jan. 25, 2019.
President Donald Trump's administration has begun laying off federal workers on Friday during the government shutdown, with a White House budget office spokesperson characterizing the layoffs as "substantial" in number.
The Senate will return to Capitol Hill today as the shutdown hits the two-week mark with no indication there has been any progress made toward ending the stalemate. Follow here for live news updates.
