The search for a 5-year-old girl who was swept away by a powerful wave and rough surf near Laguna Beach Tuesday has been suspended.

A mother and two children were swept into the ocean in Laguna Beach on Tuesday and one of the children remains missing, according to officials.

Lifeguards are having a busy start to the summer season, with swell slamming the coast likely through the end of the month.

"Upon reaching the distressed surfer, the lifeguards found an adult surfer who was face down, unconscious, and not breathing," officials said
