The Auburn Tigers have one of the most coveted job openings in the coaching carousel after firing head coach Hugh Freeze during his third season.

Auburn football is in danger of becoming Nebraska. It needs an exorcism after this Iron Bowl. Two coaches with Alabama roots would be good fits.
One name being considered to replace Freeze as the full-time head coach is Jon Sumrall, the head coach of the Tulane Green Wave. Sumrall has an impressive coaching record, with an 18-7 record during his two seasons at Tulane and a 23-4 record from his two years with the Troy Trojans.
If the Gators end up hiring Sumrall, it wouldn’t be totally disastrous for Auburn, considering Durkin is likely a fall-back option, but it would undoubtedly be embarrassing for Cohen that he wasn’t able to close on the Tigers’ main target.
Alabama secured a 24-21 win against Georgia on Saturday, Sept. 27, ending the Bulldogs' 33-game win streak at Sanford Stadium in Athens. Alabama has won three straight against Georgia, last falling to the Bulldogs in the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship.
“As an Alabama native, along with experience as a player and coach in the SEC footprint, Sumrall is a perfect fit at Auburn,” Lassan wrote. “But if Lane Kiffin leaves Ole Miss, expect Sumrall to be candidate No. 1 in Oxford. If Sumrall isn’t the pick to replace Hugh Freeze, Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz is a name to watch.”
Auburn, which fired Hugh Freeze earlier this season, should only be focused on one candidate for its open job, according to Greg McElroy.
