Massive, wind-whipped brush fires are raging across parts of Long Island's Pine Barrens region on Saturday, prompting a large emergency response to control the blazes that led to a local State of Emergency in the town of Southampton in Suffolk County.

Numerous fires are burning along Sunrise Highway on Saturday afternoon, according to the Eastport Fire Department. A smoke cloud drifting southeast was visible for miles. Fire trucks from Wading River and Medford were spotted heading toward the fire. And a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter was seen flying overhead.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Saturday afternoon as dozens of fire departments responded to Long Island’s Pine Barrens to gain control of massive brush fires fueled by strong winds.

Fast-moving brush fires fanned by high winds burned through a large swath of land on Long Island on Saturday, spewing thick gray smoke into the sky and prompting the evacuation of a military base and the closure of Sunrise Highway.

Officials stated that due to the wind conditions, the fire could persist for several hours, or even days, as the winds continue to ignite the blaze.

All four Long Island brush fires that sent soaring plumes of smoke into the air had been contained by Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
