Mel Brooks' 'Spaceballs' put a comedic dent in the sci-fi genre when it crashed onto the space-opera scene in 1987. Now, prequels and sequels later, it's back.

Judging by its announcement teaser, 'Spaceballs 2" could be gearing up to target an even broader range of targets. The teaser is a send-up of the famous "Star Wars" opening crawl, and it aptly and hilariously sums up the last few decades of science fiction franchises.

If we assume that Spaceballs 2 is going to take more than a little inspiration from the Star Wars sequel trilogy, then creating a character who is a take on Kylo Ren makes sense. And since that character should be the son of Lone Starr,

The upcoming film will feature returning stars Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis, alongside a new cast that includes Keke Palmer and Josh Gad. It's described as a "non-prequel non-reboot sequel part two, but with reboot elements franchise expansion film," which feels perfectly on-brand for a movie that once sold branded toilet paper as a punchline.

Spaceballs' is getting a sequel. Mel Brooks not only announces the good news but also takes a shot at the dream factory of the past 40 years.

Mel Brooks, who wrote, directed and starred in the original 1987 “ Spaceballs ,” is reprising his role of Yogurt for the Josh Gad led sequel. Amazon MGM Studios has scheduled the film for a theatrical release in 2027.
