Authorities are confirming the death of a skier who triggered an avalanche alongside his climbing partner, a snowboarder, while descending a slope in Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska.

National Parks Service says that the soft slab avalanche occurred on Tuesday below the Rescue Gully above Camp 14 on the West Buttress Route.

The incident is the second climbing death, but the first avalanche related, on Mt. McKinley/Denali this season. 41 year old mountaineer Alex Chiu died after falling 3,000 feet on Denali’s West Buttress route just last week.
