The first spacewalk was conducted in 1965, by Russian cosmonaut Alexey Leonov. Nearly 20 years later, cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to walk in space during a solo outing in 1984.

NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers conducted history's fifth all-female spacewalk on May 1, moving an antenna and partially preparing the ISS for a new set of solar arrays.

Anne McClain, an astronaut who missed out on the first all-female spacewalk six years ago because there weren’t enough medium-sized suits at the time, finally got her chance on Thursday. She stepped outside the International Space Station with Nichole Ayers for six hours to prepare the station for new solar panels.
