Nice to kayak round to see rock lizards, tritons and birds. Very shallow so very few bits of reef. not that great for snorkeling. Full review by Sightsee17327949230

Extremely disappointed in nearly every aspect of our TCI vacation. The island is extremely dirty, we felt very unsafe most of our trip (especially in Chalk Sound, where we spent a week in a rental ho… Full review by tonyhR1773JK

Beautiful views & gorgeous water. Picturesque location, easy driving to get there. We drove our rental car there and easily found Chalk Sound & the beautiful beaches. Take a picnic lunch. Full review by Cathy K
Since this is where you reside you probably know the areas well....considering renting a villa for 8 adults and 3 children and have options of Chalk Sound (which seems to have the nicest views and calmness winds?), Leeward and Iron shore (Alta Bella)..would like to be able to snorkel and kayak from property and have a beach where the little guys can play...we like to visit other areas and will have two cars but would be nice to be somewhat close to restaurants or bar where older ones can go after dinner ..doesn't look like Grace Bay is good for kayaking but I am not the expert....did a pool/beachfront in Cayman with a coffeehouse down the road...this worked well for us...also, looks like Sapodilla is across the road from Chalk Sound...feasible to kayak from Chalk Sound to there? Lots of questions but TA has slew helped me in planning past trips...any information appreciated!

We would love to live on TCI, but unfortunately we are still making our living on mainland US. I can answer some of your questions based upon our visit in Jan./Feb., 2018. Kayaking on Chalk Sound was pleasurable and easy in the morning, but the winds pick up by 12:00-2:00. These are generally easterly winds, and can become quite brisk on some days. Grace Bay is not what I would consider a good area for kayaking due to choppy water and winds. Although there are reports of people snorkeling in the sound, I felt the water clarity wasn't as good as I like, so we chose to go to the north end of the island at Smith's Reef... although the winds can pick up here as well. Be sure to check the wind forecast and go early no matter where you snorkel. Sapodilla Bay and (my favorite) Taylor Bay are both beautiful, relatively quiet beaches. They are located on Chalk sound, but on the Sea-side. There is no way to paddle a kayak around from Sound to Sea. Good restaurants within 5-10 minute drive from Chalk Sound include Las Brisis and Bugaloos (and they both offer views of the water while you can enjoy your adult-flavored beverages) But keep in mind that TCI is a small island; if you are planning to have cars, you can get to 95% of the good restaurants with a quick 20-25 minute drive. Travel distances to restaurants weren't a major consideration when we made our eating choices. I hope you enjoy your trip as much as we did; TCI is a beautiful island.
